Last week a 1928 list of the registered voters of Schaumburg Township was published. This week, we present the Precinct List of Registered Voters, October, 1956 list of Township of Schaumburg, District 1. These voters were eligible to vote in the 1956 presidential election between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson II.
The time difference between the two lists is a mere 28 years but, clearly the number of voters is a bit larger. The list from 1928 had a total of 437 registered voters, whereas this list has 500.
The largest discrepancy between the two lists is the fact that the 1928 list encompassed the entire township while this 1956 list appears to omit the entire eastern part of the township.
If you note the streets below, you can see that Plum Grove and Meacham are not on the list, as well as a good portion of Nerge. This accounts for missing families like the Kerns, Langsdorfs, Schweikhers, Pfingstens, Links, Reynolds, Gathmanns, Redekers, etc. It also means that the total number of voters in the township is definitely higher than 500.
The 1928 list had 165 women and 272 men registered. Judging by the names on this list, there are 189 women and 311 men. Thus, 37.8% of the voters are women and 62.2% are men. Again, keep in mind that these numbers would be higher if we had a complete list for the township. Though, it’s quite possible to assume that, with a total list, the numbers would likely be similar, which would also mean that the percentages of women and men are shockingly similar to those from 1928.
In 1950 the population of Schaumburg Township was 1080. In 1960 the population jumped 10,587, which is indicative of the sizable bounce into full-on suburbia. These 1956 numbers, however, are more reflective of the pre-development era.
In fact, judging by the roads where the voters lived, all of them fall into one of two categories. Some are the longstanding, historic roads of Barrington, Bode, Central, Golf, Higgins, Irving Park, Jahns, Nerge, Rodenberg, Roselle, Schaumberg [sic], Springinsguth and Wiese.
The other streets that consist of Grant, Illinois, Lincoln, Logan, Long, Marion, Morse, Myrtle, Park, Pratt and Seward are part of the N.O. Shively and Company subdivision at the very southern portion of the township that butts up to the Centex/Spectrum Industrial Park. You can note that subdivision in the lower left portion of the above map.
Pleasant Drive is part of the Pleasant Acres subdivision that was begun in the heart of the township in 1952 and is north and west of the intersection of Schaumburg and Roselle Roads. You can see it in the above map in the middle left. Looking at these maps and the number of voters below, it is obvious that the the farmers were beginning to sell and the developers were beginning to buy.

If we look forward to 1960 and the expanding population of 10,587, it would not be possible to list the voters of Schaumburg Township on this blog. Still, this particular list is a nice indication of the people living in the township in 1956.
While it is not complete, it is a precursor to the 1960 census and serves as a bit of a phone book of the township. It puts people in place at a certain moment in time and is eminently useful for those doing genealogy or local history research. Lists like these can definitely serve many purposes.
