BUYING A CAR IN SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP

Most people in Schaumburg Township know that Golf Road has always been the place to go car shopping.  And, if it’s not Golf Road itself, it’s darned close to Golf Road.

Part of what makes Golf Road so ideal is its easy-to-get-to location off of Route 53 and I-90.  Plus, it is a long stretch of road that winds through a fair number suburbs to the east and brings many car buyers to Schaumburg Township.  Hence, its earlier name–the Evanston-Elgin Road–as it used to be called.Franklin Weber

When someone recently suggested a blog posting on the car dealerships of Schaumburg Township, I thought I’d start a list that readers could contribute to.  After combing through various phone books dating back to 1982, I’ve compiled the following list.  Because we do not have any before that date, there is an obvious gap in the listing.  This is where you come in…

If I’ve forgotten one of the NEW car dealerships please make a comment or send me an email.  I’ll be happy to add it to the list!

While the Jeep Eagle of Schaumburg is at 851 West Golf Rd today, this location was originally Roselle Dodge, The address before the revised address changes was 208 W. Golf Road, Schaumburg, IL. 60172. I bought my first brand new car there on May 23, 1973, it was a Dodge Charger. I still have the Manufacturer’s Suggest Retail Label that was on the car. The price was $ 4,567.65 and I bought the car for $ 3.935.00 before taxes etc.

Thank you for the update Fred. I’ve added the data to the list. This is exactly what I was looking for!

Great list, thanks Jane. Would love to hear from anyone that knows when some of these dealerships opened. Always been curious which ones were first. I’m also hoping someone out there has some photos from these dealerships from years back.

Some other things I can add:

–I recall the Isuzu dealership being on Higgins near Grand Canyon Parkway at one point in a former Popeyes.
–Ed Murphy Buick also carried Opel products in the 1970s.
–The AMC/Jeep dealer was always at 920 W Golf Road; the one you list on Higgins was probably a used car lot. Why they called the dealership Roselle AMC/Jeep has always been a mystery to me.
    — Larry Faul Olds-GMC became Robert Harris Olds-GMC prior to Schaumburg Olds GMC for a very short period of time in the early 1990s. Fun fact: Larry Faul actually went to dental school and was going to be a dentist prior to a back injury that led him to a career in auto sales. His first Olds dealer was in Harvey in 1946 and he moved it to Oak Park in 1948 and finally to Schaumburg in 1970 where it was open until 1993. Mr. Faul died in 1994.
    — Schaumburg Toyota opened in 1978 and the original building was just recently replaced.
    – Tom Gollinger, who also owned Woodfield Chevy, operated Woodfield Hummer out of 1230 E Golf Road alone for a small time frame until GM shut down the Hummer brand.

      Hello Dan,

Thank you for this additional information! I have updated the list where I could find confirmation.

Unfortunately, I could not find anything in the Tribune or the Daily Herald on an Isuzu dealership around that location during that time period. (I search the ads for these sorts of locations.)

Also, according to the phone books, Woodfield Hummer had an earlier location at 1100 E. Golf Road. I have included both.

Let me know if you think of anything else…

The Pontiac dealer was Harbor Pontiac for a few years before Napleton took it over.
