CAN YOU HELP WITH A REFERENCE QUESTION?

I’m hoping you can help with a  question our Reference Desk got this week at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

A patron wants to confirm whether a piece of sculpture by the artist, De-Wain Valentine, was ever on display at Woodfield Mall.   According to her records it was an 8 foot tall pink circle made of polyester resin.  She believes this would have been in the 1970s.

These are examples of his work:

I’ve searched our online versions of the Chicago Tribune and the Daily Herald as well as doing a Google Book and Google Scholar search.  In a Chicago Tribune article from 1973 it is mentioned that he had an exhibit at the Kelly Gallery on Michigan Avenue in Chicago.  The description of that particular exhibit mentions a clear circle, not a pink one.  I also looked through the book, Schaumburg’s Woodfield Mall and found nothing there either.

Do any of you remember this exhibit or sculpture being put in place–either inside or outside the mall?

If you can help, please place a comment on this posting or send an email to Jane Rozek at jrozek@stdl.org?  Thank you!
